The first search had been a success, proving the value of the Dragon Radar Liek grasped in his hand. After his first outing he had handed it over the Flash so the scientist could check over the device to ensure it was in proper working order after the test run. It was a prototype device after all, the first time Earth and Fury technology was incorporated into a device to small.
Surprisingly this was not the first time Fury and Earth technology had been integrated; an accidental find in the archives had uncovered forgotten details of the war the J Numbers had fought a hundred years ago. It turned out that no only had Fury operatives infiltrated the northern test facility, they had also been experimenting with pairing human and Fury technology, having the human scientists then uncover ‘ancient artefacts’ from beneath the permafrost. The battle armour Carolina Sherbert had worn into battle had been a prototype, and the only surviving unit, based on that research.
Liek had even managed to dig the modified and upgraded version of that same battle suit out of the armour for Flash to analyse. Between the base unit and the Fury-made modifications the human scientist was able to have a breakthrough and was able to further refine the dragon radar, eliminating some of the bugs and incompatibilities the devices diagnostics had picked up.
Perhaps it was fate that had brought the boy here. Some strange for of destiny that was intent on making the Inheritor and Emperor of the Fury retread the same path his grandmother and the other J Numbers had walked so long ago.
Research Base N-B-751, called the Crucible by those stationed there, had once been on the cutting edge of weapons technology research for the Earth government. But as Liek’s boots crunched into the snow you wouldn’t know that unless you knew the history of the area. Officially the base was set up to research a freak event that turned the glacial region into a lava field some two hundred years ago, with the intent to see if it could be harnessed as a clean source of energy. But in reality it was meant to see if it could be turned into a weapon. When the source of the event could not be isolated the direction of research shifted to other weapon concepts, until the Fury started planting their technology for the humans to find.
A Thousand once lived and worked in the base, now reduced to nothing more then ice and sleet covered ruins barely poking through the top of the frozen surface. The boy’s blue eyes slowly scanned over the bleak wasteland knowing that only a single human survived the massacre that the Fury had brought down on the base once they had all the intel then needed. They had been swift and thorough, ruthless and efficient. The base hadn’t even had time to send out a call for help before half of the people who had been there where dead, and by the time reinforcements arrive the entire facility had been reduced and ash and slag.
The boy looked down at the radar and saw the blinking light indicating that a dragon ball was indeed in the area and sighed. Looking back over the barren waste the boy set his jaw and nodded to himself.
The next person to came across the ruins would find a slab of ice blasted reinforced cement, once part of a wall, sticking up from the snow. Engraved on it they would find the words, “In Memory of the Nine Hundred and Ninety Nine Human Lives Taken Here. May They Rest In Piece. And may this scar live on in shame for the Fury.”
